This is my English Comp 1 (1101-0037) blog. I have my main assignments listed on the right side of this page along with my personal reflections on each paper. Below is my course resume and cover letter to show my objectives and completed assignments from the semester. I have a final reflection of my thoughts through taking ENC 1101 underneath. Thanks for taking a look and have a great day!
Going into the writing of the process essay, I didn’t give myself very much credit. I saw myself as a weak writer and thought there wasn’t a possibility that I could improve myself in my writing process. I quoted from Perl’s writings about the guy, Tony, she used as an example of someone who couldn’t write unless the topic had something to do with himself. If he could relate to the idea, then he could be a star writer, but if he couldn’t tie anything to himself through the essay, he would fall into writer’s block and not try very hard. I saw myself as Tony. The more she explained him, the more I thought of myself. As I look at myself now as a writer, I think I have dramatically changed and since realizing this issue through Perl’s writing and her example of Tony, I have personally became a more involved and mature writer. As I was writing this essay and talking about my problems and difficulties as a writer, I realized what my weaknesses were and I set my mind to strengthen them and be a better, more articulate and stronger writer by the end of this semester and I really think I completed my mission.
By writing what my process is step by step while writing, helped me realize maybe which steps I should further investigate whether it is correct or not; whether it helps or harms my writing process. I easily explained my brainstorming techniques, my rough draft writing, and then my editing and finishing it into a final product. I’ve been writing essays since about third grade, so my process of coming up with a final essay is memorized and glued into my head. Since college is a complete different form of writing compared to FCAT writing, I realized that I should drop some techniques and come up with new ones and stick to those to become a stronger writer. Reading others’ essays about their writing techniques and processes helped me see which would work for me to help strengthen the way I brainstorm, write, or edit my essays.
Getting feedback from my classmates was very helpful because they explained what might’ve gone wrong in my process essay and how I could improve the way I write. We were all in the same boats because we all grew up learning how to write a proper essay for FCAT; we all really struggled with letting go of our old ways of writing that way and stepping into the real writings of a college student. I was always nervous in receiving feedback from Professor Longhany, but he was always very encouraging and uplifting in the way he graded my essay. I felt as if he related to my essay and I felt relief when I read his comments on how to improve my writing process; he didn’t just critique every problem, he looked at the strong points of my essay and told me to elaborate on them more or to work on a different section to strengthen my writing process.
